It all begins in Salta, the starting point heading south through the Quebrada de las Conchas: a long corridor of ochre and red canyons, sculpted by the wind, opening onto Cafayate and its high-altitude vineyards.
In 2005, I was travelling in southern Madagascar with my sister and my parents. On an almost deserted beach, I came across a Brazilian surfer drying his drawings in the sun between surf sessions. He was travelling the world with his board and his sketchbook — and that was the beginning of our friendship.
Ce qui frappe tout de suite, c'est à quel point cette ville peut évoquer d'autres capitales. Au détour d'une avenue, je pensais à Paris, puis à Rome ou à Madrid. Certains immeubles Art déco me rappelaient Shanghai. Les grandes places bordées de palmiers avaient un air d'Espagne, tandis que les immenses tipas, avec leurs branches sinueuses, formaient une voûte végétale sous laquelle il faisait bon marcher.
