A Meeting on a Beach in Madagascar

In 2005, I was travelling in southern Madagascar with my sister and my parents. On an almost deserted beach, I came across this Brazilian surfer drying his drawings in the sun between surf sessions. He was travelling the world with his board and his sketchbook — and that was the beginning of our friendship.

Twenty years later, his illustrated world map adorns the Addresses page of Voyageuses Paris, and his prints will be for sale at our next popup from 17 to 23 September.

Filipe Jardim: the travelling Brazilian illustrator

Filipe Jardim is a Brazilian artist and illustrator born in Rio de Janeiro, a graduate in Fine Arts from the University of Lisbon, now based between Brazil and France. His style is immediately recognisable: sun-soaked colours, fluid lines inspired by tropical vegetation, the architecture of Brasília, the surf world… A stroke at once naive and sophisticated, nourished by years of travel and a fascination for distant cultures, nature and colour. And surfing is no anecdote in his life — it is a way of being in the world. Filipe travels to surf, and he draws what he sees.

From the Beaches of Rio to the Luxury Houses

Recognition came early and through a very Parisian door: Louis Vuitton commissioned a Carnet de Voyage dedicated to Rio de Janeiro, one of the house's most iconic publications. Now a collector's item, it revealed his talent to an international audience.

Hermès then invited him to create designs for their silk scarves, beach towels and ready-to-wear collections — a consecration in the world of fashion illustration. He has also collaborated with Tiffany & Co. and contributed to The New Yorker, one of the world's most demanding cultural publications.

He is also a faithful presence at fashion weeks, capturing their atmosphere in a style that is entirely his own.

Filipe Jardim, Illustrator for Voyageuses Paris

Our first collaboration dates back to the era of the brand when it was called CHINOISES. Filipe designed a series of 4 illustrated plates — landscapes of southern China, drawn with the precision and poetry that characterise his view of the world. Mountains, rice fields, villages… Southern China in all its beauty: scenes I had experienced myself, which Filipe captured like no one else.

If you have explored the Voyageuses Addresses page, you have already seen his work: it is Filipe who illustrated the colourful world map that graces it, an imaginary landscape where all our destinations meet.
