Senegal through Sophie’s eyes
1. Why do you love Africa so much?
I deeply love Africa because it is such a vast and diverse continent. Every country, every region has its own culture, identity and contrasts. Yet wherever I have travelled, I have felt a common thread: an extraordinary joy for life that shines through everyday moments.
Even in difficult circumstances, people know how to celebrate the small things, embrace the present moment and keep their inner light alive. This ability to find strength in every situation and make life shine is a precious lesson that moves me profoundly.
2. Which African countries have left the strongest impression on you?
Senegal touched me with its warmth and hospitality, Mali with its rich cultural and spiritual heritage, and Ghana with its energy, creativity and openness. These places have left me with unforgettable memories and deep emotions.
3. Your favourite addresses in Senegal
La Cabane du Pêcheur
Located in Ngor, Dakar, this restaurant sits quite literally on the beach. The perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood with your feet almost in the sand.
Les Collines de Niassam
A beautiful eco-lodge made up of treehouse-style cabins nestled in the heart of nature. An ideal retreat to experience the peaceful side of Senegal.
4. A souvenir to bring home
Colourful Bolga baskets, woven by hand from natural fibres such as raffia and palm leaves. Originally from Ghana, they are both beautiful and remarkably sturdy, and perfectly embody the region’s artisanal craftsmanship.
5. Your musical favourites
A huge favourite ❤️ is Daara J Family. Their music combines conscious hip-hop, urban poetry and social commentary. Their first album is a true gem.
Salif Keita, often referred to as the "Golden Voice of Africa", remains one of the continent’s most iconic artists.
And Ebo Taylor, one of the leading figures of Ghanaian Afrobeat, whose music continues to inspire generations.
