Meet The Voyageuses
Each month, Voyageuses highlights a "Creative Traveler" inspired by crafts or cultures from here and elsewhere.
Isa - Voyageuse in New York, USA
Isa lives in New York after spending five years in Gabon and twelve years in Shanghai. Inspired by these different cultures and driven by her love of colour and prints, she created the accessories brand Maison Germaine. Here, she shares some of her favourite New York addresses and insider tips.
New York through Isa’s eyes
1. What does New York bring to your life that Paris doesn't?
New York has always been a fantasy of mine. The city is iconic, and many of us grew up watching American films and television series set in its streets. The first time I came here, I was 26 years old, and I remember thinking that I would love to live here one day.
What I appreciate most about New York is the climate, the diversity of its people, the architecture and, above all, Central Park, which continues to amaze me every day. It offers a place to recharge and escape from the city's constant noise.
I also love those spontaneous encounters with strangers who compliment your outfit or simply start a conversation. There is a real sense of freedom in the way people dress and express themselves. In Paris, I feel there are stronger expectations around how one should dress, speak or behave.
I had already noticed something similar when comparing France with China, particularly Shanghai, where people seem much less concerned with the opinions of others and feel freer to experiment with their personal style.
2. A place you love in New York
Central Park, and more specifically the Reservoir, where I regularly go for a run.
3. Restaurants
Tarallucci is a cosy little Italian restaurant that makes me feel at home. The atmosphere is warm, and the cappuccino tastes just like it does in Italy. It is only two blocks from my apartment, and I go there almost every day.
Tartine (253 W 11th Street) is a charming French bistro in the West Village, perfect for lunch and offering excellent value for money.
Au Za’atar (1063 First Avenue) is one of my favourite Lebanese restaurants. I especially love the Shish Tawook, the Fattoush salad and the grilled halloumi with honey.
4. A shop
I have to admit that it is difficult for me to name a favourite store because I rarely find what I am looking for when shopping in New York. The disappointment often matches the prices, which I find exorbitant and hard to justify.
5. Something you always bring back and can't find elsewhere
Trader Joe’s biscuits and tote bags — much to the delight of my friends!
From Gabon to Shanghai and now New York, Isa has always been drawn to colour, travel and craftsmanship. Through Maison Germaine, she brings together these influences in a joyful collection of accessories inspired by the places and cultures that have shaped her journey.
